There has been an unprecedented increased demand for long saddle hackle feathers in the fashion industry for the great fly tying feathers. Due to this unanticipated demand Whiting farms and all fly shop businesses were not prepared for this outside demand for fly tying feathers. They are trying to increase production; however, it takes awhile for the egg to hatch and the bird grow and then be harvested and dyed in various colors. Who knew fly tying materials are also a fashion product. Whiting Farms and our business is trying to handle the demand. One way of handling demand is prices are increasing. This is bad for fly tiers. So my recommendation is head down to the local beauty shop and start pulling feathers out of the beauty conscious women as they go out the door. The good thing is this is the fashion industry and what is popular today will be next years Kmart special :-)

We do not have everything on hand! We order and ship daily and our inventory changes daily. Due to the extreme cost, we cannot maintain all of their products in our inventory. We are attempting to list most of their products. We order from Whiting Farms weekly and sometimes daily. It appears that Whiting farms cannot harvest the birds fast enough for demand. The egg has to hatch and the birds take a year or longer to grow before they can be harvested. We are now charging a restocking fee of 20% on hackle.
